HKU Master of Journalism

You've already seen my previous posts on my new career direction. I went to the newly located Grassroots Pantry with Honey, who's actually my classmate from my Master of Journalism course at the University of Hong Kong. The first two months have been great so far! It's hardcore in a way that's different from Architecture, but I like it a lot. The most challenging course for me is definitely Video Production because I'm already a noob with cameras, so video cameras, oh man, I can't even begin to explain! But I'm coping fine and I really, really enjoy what I'm studying!

Here are some random pictures taken in September and October that are related to my course or the people in my course. The first is Honey's birthday, followed by a random lunch at a local Chinese cha chan teng, lunch at Locofama with Honey, a photo from a Video Production class that my classmate captured and a really fun BBQ gathering at my friend Irene's place.

Master of Journalism?

So... this is kind of hard for me to write because well... who really decides to leave their stable, high paying and highly respected career path for something that is the complete opposite in today's society? Who really decides to flip a middle finger at four years of their life for something that they know has a high probability of not working out?

Okay, so I know a lot of people actually quit their high profile jobs to pursue their passion. But I always feel like those people have already earned and saved a decent amount of money that they don't need any more, so they can actually spend the extras on whatever they like, like y'know, opening a café or something.

Me? I'm so young. I'm freakin' 21. Obviously I do not have enough money, not for a secure future at least, even if I take into account my salary from this year's job. Honestly, half of my total salary is used up already from paying for this new thing... and it's not like I don't spend money on myself monthly too (though my close friends all know I'm a stingy bitch and I don't actually splurge ever, ha ha)!

It was such a difficult decision but I've decided. And though I'm going to keep quiet about this to the public until the time comes, I'm comfortable writing about it on this blog because as far as I know, no one who knows me in real life reads it. ;)

I've decided to do a one year master's degree in journalism at the University of Hong Kong.

Studio Reunion at Barbecue

The long-awaited studio group dinner had been talked about for ages by my tutor but we never got around to it even after a whole year - and finally, half a year after graduation, we had a reunion at Barbecue in Tai Hang. Our tutor also invited his current students but only a small number of them came, but I'd say that the dinner was mainly catered to our year group anyway. It was so nice to catch up with a few ex-classmates who I hadn't seen in a while since we all work in different places now! I actually really liked my studio group, I felt like we helped each other rather than compete with each other, which was nice. All of us had chill personalities as well - unlike some individuals in other groups, so our year went by with minimum pressure (minimum pressure for an Architecture degree, ha ha, which is still very much pressurised...).

HKU Architecture Graduation 2014: Graduation Carnival

Graduation Series:
Part 1  |  Part 2  |  Part 3  |  Part 4  |  Part 5

The weekend following the actual Graduation Congregation, I went back to HKU with my paternal grandparents to take pictures at the HKU Class of 2014 Graduation Carnival.

It was... erm, not a great success. The university was packed with graduates of all levels and their families and friends all taking photos. I could barely get close to the additional carnival decorations and if I did, I was hurried by the huge line of graduates waiting for their turn. Plus, we didn't have a photographer or a professional camera, and the people taking our pictures were my grandparents and parents themselves... and you know old people and cameras... they can barely click the button, much less focus and find a nice composition. The photos you'll see in this blog post have to cropped and rotated by yours truly painstakingly - I am not joking when I say it took hours.

I'm not complaining though - it was a nice meet up with my Maamaa and Yeye. After all, the photos don't really matter at all, what was important was that I spent quality time with my grandparents. :)

HKU Architecture Graduation 2014: Photos with Aedas Graduates

Graduation Series:
Part 1  |  Part 2  |  Part 3  |  Part 4  |  Part 5

TGIF! Spent my lunch time on Friday taking graduation photographs with the other graduates who are working in my firm. Well, some of them anyway... I guess it's the gang I usually hang out with because we happen to all work on the 30th floor. The weather was nice and the sun was out... though the photo session was super rushed because we had to eat first (we just bought takeaway from the supermarket next door and shoved down our food in the park) before we could even slip on our gowns. The pictures came out quite cute though! Have a look (at the non-embarrassing ones I've filtered for this blog, haha)!

HKU Architecture Graduation 2014: Back to School

Graduation Series:
Part 1  |  Part 2  |  Part 3  |  Part 4  |  Part 5

This entry is basically the second part of my graduation day! As I mentioned in the previous entry, after taking pictures at the congregation venue in City Hall, I went for lunch with my family, then returned to HKU to take pictures with the students from other years as well as my classmates (again) with the familiar background setting of our school and studio.
