Cultural Journalism Campus 2016

I've been super busy recently because I joined the student journalism program Cultural Journalism Campus and was selected as one of the nine fellows in 2016. Basically, the program gave me access to the art scene during Hong Kong’s art week in March 2016, where I had the privilege to attend Art Basel, Art Central, Asia Contemporary Art Show and many other gallery openings, cocktail parties and auctions. It was a dream come true for me and it reconnected me with fine art - which has always been my passion, before I started specialising in architecture. My job throughout the week was to interview and report on the top dogs, gallerists, artists and anyone involved, which I was more than willing to do so. Art and writing - my favourites (stick food in and it'll be even better).

We even got to meet and interview Mark Spiegler, the global director of Art Basel! You can see a picture below (and I got to stand beside him haha).

If there's one thing I regret, it's not being able to spend more time on the program. You guys know I study full time (and it's the beginning of deadlines galore) and work part time, so I had to miss some lessons, take time off work and skip some events in order to do everything... mediocrely. I could've done better if I wasn't so swamped, but what can you do? It was an opportunity I just could not miss!

The works and exhibitions in the photos below:
  • A Path To Life solo exhibition of artist Li Yonggeng at Galerie du Monde
  • Mill6 Foundation's Social Fabric pop-up exhibition of artists Mariana Hahn and Kwan Sheung-chi at The Annex
  • Statement 3: New Sculpture from Germany exhibition at Goethe-Institut Hong Kong
Check out my Cultural Journalism Campus works on my online portfolio!

The Foreign Correspondents’ Club

Visited the Foreign Correspondents’ Club for the second time in my life during Photojournalism class! I actually typed "first" time just now but I remembered that I had been there briefly once before, not long ago actually. I haven't talked about it on my blog yet, but I'm going to be interning for HK Magazine during my winter semester break, and I had an interview a week or so back with the senior editor there. Nevertheless, it was my first official visit to the FCC today, where we got to explore the place with our teacher, Kees. Would love to become a member one day but I'll definitely need some $$$, haha!

My First Law Court Visit

For Media Law class, a few of us chose to work individually for our projects instead of in groups. The task was different if you wanted to work by yourself, and one option for us was to sit through a few public court cases then write a few articles on them. Decided to check out a rape case with Honey, Michelle and John one day because it sounded quite interesting. Y'know, not like your usual boring finance and law stuff which would probably put me to sleep. It was my first time at Hong Kong's High Court and I was actually quite excited despite the early morning start!

We went to both the morning and afternoon sessions, and in between the girls and I went to eat lunch at Mano in Central, a café that Honey and I had both wanted to try for a while. I loved their pick-yourself salad bowl because I could choose whatever I wanted in whatever amount for a fixed price! Of course, it was a one time visit to the salad bar only, but I think I pretty much aced it with my copious amount of my favourite chicken breast. It was a huge struggle trying not to ignore the vegetables and just get a whole plate of chicken. ;)

The court room was freezing, so before we went back for the afternoon session I actually dropped by Topshop and bought a $1000+ winter jacket. It was thick as hell with a fur lining and a hood, but with the scarily low temperatures of High Court, I decided to do my best to prevent myself from turning into ice. I felt so bad and the jacket was actually quite nice, but $1000 - with student discount - was really too much for a jacket in my opinion, so right after the court case wrapped up for the day I actually went back to Topshop to refund it. Haha, I'm so sorry, but you saved my life Topshop!

HKU Master of Journalism

You've already seen my previous posts on my new career direction. I went to the newly located Grassroots Pantry with Honey, who's actually my classmate from my Master of Journalism course at the University of Hong Kong. The first two months have been great so far! It's hardcore in a way that's different from Architecture, but I like it a lot. The most challenging course for me is definitely Video Production because I'm already a noob with cameras, so video cameras, oh man, I can't even begin to explain! But I'm coping fine and I really, really enjoy what I'm studying!

Here are some random pictures taken in September and October that are related to my course or the people in my course. The first is Honey's birthday, followed by a random lunch at a local Chinese cha chan teng, lunch at Locofama with Honey, a photo from a Video Production class that my classmate captured and a really fun BBQ gathering at my friend Irene's place.

Master of Journalism?

So... this is kind of hard for me to write because well... who really decides to leave their stable, high paying and highly respected career path for something that is the complete opposite in today's society? Who really decides to flip a middle finger at four years of their life for something that they know has a high probability of not working out?

Okay, so I know a lot of people actually quit their high profile jobs to pursue their passion. But I always feel like those people have already earned and saved a decent amount of money that they don't need any more, so they can actually spend the extras on whatever they like, like y'know, opening a café or something.

Me? I'm so young. I'm freakin' 21. Obviously I do not have enough money, not for a secure future at least, even if I take into account my salary from this year's job. Honestly, half of my total salary is used up already from paying for this new thing... and it's not like I don't spend money on myself monthly too (though my close friends all know I'm a stingy bitch and I don't actually splurge ever, ha ha)!

It was such a difficult decision but I've decided. And though I'm going to keep quiet about this to the public until the time comes, I'm comfortable writing about it on this blog because as far as I know, no one who knows me in real life reads it. ;)

I've decided to do a one year master's degree in journalism at the University of Hong Kong.
