Hong Kong Design Institute

Another day without planning! Every weekend, I'd usually mention a café I wanted to try, but for some reason I wasn't feeling it much in particular yesterday. It was already the afternoon when Jason and I met up, so we randomly decided to visit the Hong Kong Design Institute which had some exhibitions I'd been meaning to see for a while. We not only checked out two exhibitions: Weingart Typography and Urban Regeneration - Past, Present and Future, but we also looked at the architecture of the school. Afterwards, we went for a drink (non-alcoholic of course) at The Brewed Vena, a nearby café on my to-do-list!

Nightscape 2050 & Pregio by Barista Caffe

Research tells me that 2015 was the International Year of Lights, which was actually a global initiative adopted by the United Nations! That I didn't know though when I visited the Nightscape 2050 exhibition held by Lighting Planners Associates in Artistree. Jason and I were just looking for a place for tea before we parted ways for dinner, and as I'm a huge fan of Artistree, I decided to check the place to see if there were any current exhibitions. We were lucky it was an architectural one! After, we stopped by Pregio by Barista Caffe for chocolate waffles. :)

Tai Ping Shan Street, Innovation Tower & Mid-Autumn Festival

I was to photograph an event for my Photojournalism class, so on Mid-Autumn Festival I took my DSLR and boyfriend with me to visit the Jockey Club Innovation Tower in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for the first time in my life. Actually, I'd wanted to go there since forever - I mean you know, Zaha Hadid did design it and she's one of the most well-known architects in the world, whether you love or hate her.

First though, Jason and I explored Tai Ping Shan Street for lunch because I had to redeem a snack from Anything But Salads with my Sugar Hong Kong app. Yep, Charmy-cheap-ass strikes, once again. We had lunch at Oldish, collected my organic sundried tomatoes, then stumbled upon Teakha which had a little pop-up pottery thing by made by hama. It was their last day and I was lucky enough to try their free teeny tiny ceramics making thing! It was hella hot though...

After making our way to PolyU in Hung Hom, where the 10DAYFEST 2015: 108 Stories of Social Innovation was being held in the Innovation Tower, Jason and I went back to Causeway Bay for dinner. We then stopped by Victoria Park to look at the lantern display. The last time we went was two years ago, on Jason's birthday in 2013 actually! I can't believe he turned 23 then and next year, it's my turn to turn 23. Man, time flies.

Mei Ho House & Sanrio Star Chef Institute

When I was looking for potential firms to work for, I stumbled across Mei Ho House 美荷樓 in Shek Kip Mei. I had an interview with the architecture firm that was responsible for its design, so I actually did thorough research on the revitalisation project before actually visiting it. The visit wasn't part of my research - by the time I actually went to the place in person, I'd already accepted another firm's offer, but what I read on the internet really sparked my interest in the place. So one summer Tuesday, I dragged Jason with me to give it a visit!

Formerly part of Shek Kip Mei Estate, the building now called Mei Ho House was destroyed in 1953 by a huge fire. Instead of suffering the fate demolition like the other buildings around it though, it was chosen to be preserved (yay!). Today, it is used as a city hostel by the Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association and is known as YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel. Not only does it serve its current purpose of housing tourists, but it also doubles as a museum and restaurant that teaches the public about the history of the area!

The project was everything I'd expected - the museum was small but interesting, and Fullcup Café had super cute decor which I adored. Not to forget the gift shop, which sold a lot of products that made me reminisce on my childhood in Hong Kong before the internet took over. But I'll let the pictures do the talking!

After a full afternoon in Mei Ho House, Jason and I went to Langham Place for the Sanrio Star Chef Institute exhibition. If you're a regular reader of my blog or you follow me on Instagram, you'd know that I'm obsessed with anything Sanrio and cutesy... ha ha I'm such a typical girl when it comes to things like this. I'm still disappointed I never got to visit My Melody's pop-up café, but man I really wasn't ready to line up five hours just to have tea...

Though if the pop-up café's theme was Pokemon or Digimon, I'd definitely be willing to queue... hell I'd even queue overnight. Which I guess is why I bought the 15th anniversary Digivice for $750. But oops, I've gone off on a tangent again.

After a full day of photo taking, we went to my favourite California Pizza Kitchen for dinner! I'm so sad that it closed in Causeway Bay... now the nearest branch is in Mongkok and honestly I don't really leave Hong Kong Island much so I never get it eat it. Bleh.
