Yeye's Birthday 2015

Every year at around December to February, I see my extended family a lot because of all the events and occasions. You know the sort - Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year... celebrations both Western and Chinese. The fifth day of the lunar calendar is also my Yeye's birthday, which we celebrate with a dinner annually (as we should). My uncle's family was away on vacation during the first day of Chinese New Year but they were back for my Yeye's birthday, so everyone (except my other Uncle's family in America) was in attendance for a celebration!

...And by the way, I have no idea how old my Yeye is.

Chinese New Year Family BBQ

On the fourth day of Chinese New Year (remind me why I am separating these three measly pictures from the rest of the CNY blog entry?), my family on my maternal side decided to go for a BBQ in Big Wave Bay. My Nutrition exam was in five days but I still decided to attend against my better judgement (I paid the consequences later). Nevertheless, it was a fun outdoors day and a nice wrap up to my short CNY holidays this year. The weather, which had been a bit of a downer in itself the past few days, was not too cold nor too hot. There wasn't any sun, but I guess that was all well because we didn't want to sweat like pigs anyway. The only thing was it rained a bit and we had to rent an umbrella, but nothing too bad happened. A success overall, I'd say!

Year of the Goat 2015

Unfortunately, this year's Chinese New Year blog recap won't be full of variety like last year's. Er, main reason being that I didn't bother taking photos, haha. Especially with the maternal side of my family because our food spread wasn't "Instagram-worthy" enough (there I go again with my perfectionist personality in terms of aesthetics). Plus, I guess I wasn't really in the mood because my Nutrition exam was looming and it was a huge downer on my mood. I felt so guilty if I did anything else apart from revision, even if it was ticking things off of my To-Do-List. But of course, in the end, I didn't really study anyway, haha. I suck (poop)! Hey but really, I did need a break... working from 9-6 really wears you out, I am not joking.

PS: The movie we watched on the second day of Chinese New Year, 12金鴨 (12 Golden Ducks), was the worst movie I have ever watched. EVER EVER EVER. I honestly think it was sooooo not worth the money paid, even if it's a family tradition to watch a Hong Kong Chinese New Year movie on the second day every year. We only settled for the movie because all the others were sold out. FOL. Please don't even bother watching it on the internet.

Clar's 22nd Birthday at Café&Meal MUJI & Red MR

The N's Girls birthday celebrations this year are going to be difficult, especially since we're all working now so we're not constantly and conveniently together in the studio anymore. Hmm... but I guess next year will be easier, since we'll all be going back to school for our Masters? Unless of course, we fly to other destinations worldwide instead. But honestly, knowing my friends, they'd probably stay in HKU (we're boring like that).

We'd decided on a picnic for Clar's 22nd birthday, but the weather didn't cooperate (it rained, boo) so we changed plans last minute and had lunch at Café&Meal MUJI then went karaoke-ing at Red MR. I'd wanted to try MUJI's café for the longest time but once again, never actually got around to it, so that was awesome. Quite expensive though! During karaoke, we basically spammed Taylor Swift's 22 because nothing was more appropriate (we also spammed her older song Fifteen, for the record, because we wish... LOL). I guess it'd be a recurring theme song for all our birthdays this year apart from Whitney's because she's one year older.

We also collectively got Clar a Benefit make-up set, a MAC lipstick and a cake from Smile Yogurt & Dessert Bar! And of course, our trademark N's Girls cards, even though it was super difficult to collaborate this year due to us being separated.

Valentine's Day 2015

This year's Valentine's Day celebration was definitely more eventful and (slightly) more well-prepared than last year's. Though last year, I just had four wisdom teeth removed at once in a surgery so there wasn't much I could eat apart from really soft veggies and tofu. Plus, I was busy with my final year of Architecture (excuses excuses... I was just not bothered). Anyway. This year Jason and I even decided we would exchange gifts, something we omitted from 2014's celebrations!

I seriously couldn't think of what to get him so in the end I went down the typical route - I made chocolate. Well, chocolate truffles, to be exact. I didn't taste any of it but Jason told me they were bombtastic, and that even his Mum agreed. I sincerely hope that he was telling the truth and not lying just to spare my feelings, because I really wouldn't mind if he decided to slay me with brutal honesty. But wait, why am I doubting my own awesomeness? Take a look at the truffles yourself!

Are they bombtastic or what? Not only do they taste good - according to Jason's family, whom I'm going to take the word for - but they look good too! And I don't care that I'm admiring my own work. I mean, I had to buy all the ingredients, make the damn things, and look! I even went to Wanchai to get a nice little gift box for them especially. Am I a dedicated girlfriend or what? A gazillion brownie points please.

For the actual celebration, we wanted to have a place to cook, so we ended up booking a room in Partyland Plus in Kwun Tong. The point wasn't the party room - it was way too big, for starters, because we'd booked too last minute and all the couply rooms were taken - but that Partyland Plus offered a kitchen with all the basic utensils. You will not believe how hard it is to find an affordable rented kitchen in Hong Kong... The kitchen in Partyland Plus was communal between all the rented rooms though, so we made sure to begin cooking as soon as we got there. We took two hours to make simple-ass dishes because we're noobs, but for some reason no one else began cooking until we were done (then it got real crowded, but we were starving and ready to chow down by 9PM)... perhaps the reason was that we looked too ugly HA HA jk um ok. But yeah, take a look at our menu!

By the time we finished eating it was late, and we didn't leave much time to explore the huge room. We both would've preferred a much smaller room because it was too eerie in there with just two people... but oh well, that's punishment for being so last minute. The best thing about the room we rented was the dolls though, literally littered all over the floor. I especially adored the giant teddy bears even though they were sort of broken and droopy. We went home at 11PM after experimenting with the selfie stick that Jason had gotten for me for Christmas, and that was that. Overall, I'd say the night was quite a success!

The AIA Great European Carnival 2015

I'm sure you've heard of the return of The AIA Great European Carnival to Hong Kong after years and years. Eight years, to be exact, because its last appearance in the city was at the end of 2006 to the beginning of 2007. And apparently, it's to return for three consecutive years! I remember going once as a child with my Gonggong (Grandpa) and cousin Cherie, and once again when I was in Year Eight with Karina and Marie. I still have photos from both occasions, and typing this entry makes me sort of nostalgic so I think I'll go dig them up right now. But not to show you guys, of course, because I was hella ugly back then (I mean when I was a tween. I don't think I was too bad as a cute child). I had tons of fun both times and you bet I was excited when I heard that it was making a reappearance back in Hong Kong!

Though it opened in December, I actually didn't go until February. I even gave up going because I work a full-time job which meant that I could only go on weekends, but the weekends were usually crowded as hell and the tickets for Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays cost more. Being the cheap ass I am, I felt that it wasn't worth it (how dare I?)? But in the end Jason and I went anyway because fuck it, it was a once a year thing so I might as well let go of my OCD tendencies for one damn day.

Jason kept telling me how much pressure he was under because I'd seen many cute dolls I wanted from winning stall games through scanning other peoples' Instagrams. In particular, I really wanted this pink-and-purple unicorn and I couldn't shut up about it. I thoroughly expected to get it... and guess what? I DID! But the plot twist?

I won it myself!

Actually out of the three dolls we ended up taking away from the fair, two of them (the bigger ones, may I add) I won myself. This strong independent woman don't need no man! Though it was possible to win the purple unicorn from a stall game (which both Jason and I tried and failed), I actually won it from a crane machine... on my second token. LOL. I didn't expect it at all because the guy before me was trying to get the same unicorn and he'd spent like twenty tokens on it before giving up? I just decided to try for the hell of it. Am I freakin' skilled or what? (I refuse to admit that perhaps I was just lucky - I am never lucky, guys.)

We actually didn't try any rides because a few days before we went, there was an accident on one of them and we were too pussy smart to risk our lives. We also didn't purchase any extra tokens because we are cheap as hell. So I suppose we didn't get the full experience, though to be honest I was a hundred percent satisfied and ready to leave after winning my unicorn in the first half hour we were there (we only ended up staying like two hours).
