Singapore: Day 1

Posting pictures of my Singapore trip with Jason! It's our first time travelling together - yes, you heard right. We've nearly been dating three years and yet this is our first overseas trip ever. We move slow, haha. We chose Singapore because I've always wanted to go, it's close and it's just like Hong Kong! What's more, they have tons of salad places. ;)

Day 1 shows us arriving in the city, exploring Haji Lane where we went to Bergs for lunch randomly (Jason got too hungry to wait around) and visiting Lasalle College of the Arts. Yep, we visited an art school just for the architecture, haha. We did more but I didn't bother taking photos. Oh, and if you're curious, we stayed at a hotel called V Hotel Lavender - it was nothing special, just your typical cheapish hotel, nothing worth praising or ranting about.

Lai Yuen Fail

The original Lai Yuen Amusement Park opened in 1949 and closed in 1997. It was the largest amusement park of its time and an icon of old Hong Kong. I don't remember it at all because it was more for my grandparents' and parents' generation, but my Mum told me that I'd actually gone when I was just a kid!

Since I left my full time job at the end of June, I found myself hanging out with my Mum more and more on weekdays... okay maybe it's only because I have no other friends shut up lol. But anyway, to celebrate its 66th anniversary, a rendition of Lai Yuen returned to Hong Kong from the end of June until September! Entry was free, so after having lunch in Admiralty, Mum and I decided to check out the park.

Unfortunately, as the title of this blog post suggests, it was a big fat failure. The previous day was a typhoon day, and it was closed for the afternoon. Erm, so we just took a picture at the entrance and called it a day. Luckily at Central Pier No. 8, Hong Kong Maritime Museum just happened to have a special exhibition called Made in Hong Kong: Our City, Our Stories, so we checked that out instead. The view of the harbour from the exhibition hall was really nice too!

Francfranc Afternoon Tea at EAST Hong Kong

Sometime mid-year, FEAST (Food by EAST) at EAST Hong Kong - which is a hotel in Taikoo Shing if you didn't know - had a special afternoon/high tea set that they did in collaboration with Francfranc. The cutlery and food were all so cute, I couldn't resist! Actually, I'd booked the place months ago without even knowing who to go with because I'd previously been unable to book FEAST's previous collaboration with Cath Kidston and I didn't want to repeat that regret I felt, haha. I couldn't find anyone to go with me to have the afternoon tea as the date drew nearer, mainly because it was only available on weekdays and all my friends were still working (By then I'd left my Year-out job - just).

Luckily Erica was back in Hong Kong for a week or so, so I grabbed the chance and dragged her along with me. We had such a great catch up too!

Father's Day Brunch Buffet at Al Molo Ristorante Italiano

Since my birthday brunch at Al Molo Ristorante Italiano was so good, I knew I had to go back one more time before the end of the year. But I mean, buffets are never cheap, even if they're brunch buffets, so it was supposed to be, y'know, a treat. The weekday br/lunch at Al Molo Ristorante Italiano is slightly lower in price than the weekend one, for obvious reasons, so to celebrate both Father's Day and passing my driving exam we had a feast!

I Passed!

So, after nearly one year (but not quite yet okay), guess who finally passed her driving exam? But before you think I'm just you know, one of those 'typical women who can't drive', let me explain.

I changed driving instructors halfway through because my previous one was old and he could not even hear what I was asking him. I knew I'd fail, because he couldn't even explain the most basic concepts to me. Then I delayed my exam twice because I was really busy with work. And you know how it is when you work 9 to 6... I was only free to drive either on the weekends, where my new instructor would be nearly always fully booked, or on weeknights, but after a long day of work and in between my three-times-a-week Nutrition classes, I didn't really have the time nor energy.

Then the first time I took my exam in February, I passed Part B (parking etc) but failed the road test. I was examined on the Happy Valley route, so if you're familiar with Hong Kong, you'd know how fucking busy those streets are. Cars parked all over the lanes, school buses, people shooting out into the road from every direction. I think it's one of the hardest routes in Hong Kong. But never mind, I passed my exam the second time around during rush hour (after I quit my Year-out job, may I add!).

All White Party

Blog post is titled so because our dress code for the evening was all white... I was going to name it "Mock-Hollister Party" because we were all joking about how we were dressed like the lame Hollister and A&F employees (a.k.a. fake American/British/Canadian-born-Chinese bitches) but now that I think about it, it doesn't make sense. All white = Hollister? What?

Well never mind that, the purpose of our all white dress code was to celebrate Hank and Llywelyn's birthdays! Funnily though both their birthdays were in June, and I think Hank's was even in mid-June. But it was simply impossible to get everyone free together cos we'd all quit our Year-out jobs by then and were flying away from Hong Kong for vacation at different times... so July 1st, a public holiday, was all we could manage. And even then, Clar could not make it.

The others actually had a pool party in the afternoon but I couldn't make it cos I had a driving lesson then a late-lunch date with Sarah. It was a public holiday too so I was stuck in traffic all minibus ride from Hang Hau MTR to Sai Kung Town Centre, then I had to line up for a taxi into Llywelyn's place... the line was so long I ended up wait two fucking hours! Luckily I'd bought 2lbs+ of grapes from Wellcome and I actually ate the whole box while in line.

And guess what? In the end, Llywelyn, Hank and Cherry joined me at the town centre and we bought takeaway Thai food for dinner together (though we did make some food ourselves), then they drove me back to the place. So I would've never gotten to Llywelyn's if I'd just waited for the taxi line to thin. Fml.
