HKU Architecture Graduation 2014: The Congregation at Hong Kong City Hall

Graduation Series:
Part 1  |  Part 2  |  Part 3  |  Part 4  |  Part 5

This is the first blog post of many of the ultimate ending to my three years of Architecture in HKU... the day I'd been waiting for since forever... and now that it's here I can't quite believe it. Time really flies, you know? One minute I was still dealing with my high school boyfriend drama when I graduated from South Island School in 2011, the next minute... I've already got my degree and I'm graduating from university?

My time in HKU and my all-nighters in the studio certain didn't feel fast, but there I was on a Monday at the end of November, bowing down to the whole Faculty of Architecture, accepting my First-class Honours and Dean's List Honours alongside with my BA in Architectural Studies. Of course it felt bittersweet, but it also felt like a sigh of relief personally because I'd never been able to cope with my stress well... one glance at all the weight I lost and the tears I cried during my final year could tell you that. Nevertheless, it was such a proud moment for me because I'd unexpectedly - and what a strange twist of events! - gotten the top grades in my year, beating out even some of the exchange students.

The day of the Congregation Ceremony at Hong Kong City Hall went something like this: arrive at 9:30AM, sit the actual ceremony until 12:30PM, take pictures with my classmates at the graduation venue until 2:00PM, lunch with my family until 4PM, then it was back to HKU for more photos until dinner time. A yearly ritual that every graduating class of HKU Architecture fulfils.

It was a heck of a tiring day but it will be one that I'll remember forever.

Freespace Fest 2014

Like Clockenflap, the Freespace Fest is a cultural artsy fartsy event that happens yearly in Hong Kong which I'd missed every single year thanks to my finals. Free of my exams this year, I made plans to go with the girls more than a month prior to the actual event. I bought tickets super early on cos I was scared they'd be sold out. After a while though - I guess the tickets weren't selling well or something - the organisers decided to make it a free event... and I'm still waiting for my refund. *grumbles* But this proves how early on I'd decided to go haha.

But because it was now a free event, we had no more obligations to go and everyone totally ditched. Everyone but Clar - so the two of us went on our little "dates" again LOL. We went pretty late, I think we arrived at 4PM or something and then Clar had to leave by 6PM so we spent under two hours there, which was totally not enough for first-timer me. :( Still, what I did see was awesome!

The concept of Freefest is that basically you can do anything there, and the place was littered with young hipster Instagrsmmers having picnics and selling their homemade goods. Clar bought a pair of second-hand boyfriend jeans and I bought a second-hand basic tshirt (for $20 only!) because I'd dressed for w-i-n-t-e-r and it was sizzling hot that day (my fault for not checking the weather). The line for the toilet was too long though so I didn't even change into it in the end, lol.

Apart from people doing their personal thang, there were also mini-activities and food vendors and a stage with live music. All of which we didn't have time to check out, sigh. But we did enjoy the sunset!
